We want you to feel comfortable seeking the care you need without being concerned about privacy issues. The Student Health Service (SHS) maintains the highest standards of confidentiality in accordance with ethical and professional standards and in full compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility Act (HIPAA). No medical information is shared with the CUIMC schools, family, or friends without your written request and consent. SHS clinicians work as a team and consult with one another, as needed. There may also be communication between the various divisions of SHS when clinically indicated, to facilitate treatment planning.
SHS collects and stores personal health information for health sciences students in its own independent medical records system. Your medical records are completely separate from all other university records. Unless we have your specific written permission, SHS medical records are only accessible to SHS staff who are directly involved in providing your health care, except as authorized or required by law, or in our judgment as necessary to protect you or others from a serious threat to health or safety. We do not share SHS medical records with New York Presbyterian Hospital without your written permission.
If you have questions or concerns about the confidentiality of your personal health information, please contact SHS for more information or advice.
