Students on Private Insurance

The Student Health Service (SHS) is still your primary source for your healthcare needs on campus, regardless of your insurance coverage. All full-time students are required to pay the SHS fee, and this fee covers the cost of all routine services provided in SHS, including primary care visits, mental health services, health promotion and certain immunizations.

If you are seen in SHS for a primary care visit, there is no copay for the actual nursing or clinician visit – this is covered by the SHS fee. There is no limit to the number of primary care visits either. However, if your clinician recommends laboratory testing, laboratory tests, certain immunizations (not covered by the SHS fee), imaging procedures, prescription drugs, and care received outside of SHS, separate charges may be applied (per your insurance benefits). For laboratory tests done at SHS, you will be asked to pay the cost of these tests, and SHS will then provide you with a receipt and the appropriate documentation to submit to your insurance carrier for reimbursement. An alternative is to ask your clinician to give you a requisition for the laboratory tests that you can take to a nearby facility where the labs can be drawn, and your insurance billed directly.

Even with private insurance, you are still eligible for up to ten visits at the mental health service annually without charge. If additional visits are required, your mental health provider will work with you and your insurance carrier to ensure necessary care is continued.

You are also eligible for all services offered through the Center for Student Wellness, included all workshops, yoga and Pilates programs, and individual services in wellness and AIMS (Addiction Information & Management Strategies).
