Studying in the health professions affords students tremendous opportunities and some unique challenges. As you continue to provide guidance and support to your student, we want to share resources to assist.
CUIMC Student Health Service (SHS) is here to help in planned and urgent situations. Our medical clinic provides a range of resources including: preventive services, occupational health, travel services, sexual and reproductive health resources, medications and immunizations, nutrition, and acupuncture. In addition to our clinic hours, your student can access a clinician on call 24/7 by calling 212-305-3400.
Balancing School and Life
Graduate school can be a time of transition for many students. At SHS, we understand that academic success is strongly tied to health and wellness. We have many resources available to support our students, including medical services, mental health services, and wellness services. Our programs help to address the unique challenges faced by graduate students and support them through their program of study.
Mental Health Services
The psychologists, social workers and psychiatrists at Mental Health Services are experienced in working with the issues arising for students in the course of their professional training. In addition, they can offer specific treatment interventions for a range of presenting issues, including mood disorders, eating disorders, trauma, drug and alcohol concerns, and other addictive behaviors. Available treatments include short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, as well as group psychotherapy, and, in some instances, couples counseling .
Students can access many resources through the Center for Student Wellness (CSW). From pet therapy to yoga & Pilates, meditation, Crafternoons and more, the aim of CSW is to help students become as good at self-care as they are at caring for patients and communities. Students can also schedule an appointment with a member of the CSW team to discuss ways to find balance, optimize performance, practice self-compassion, and learn strategies to adjust to a new environment.
SHS complies with all federal and state laws protecting the privacy of health information about your student. Your student is in charge of disclosure of any information. In a situation where a person could be in serious imminent harm, we will use our professional judgment to notify persons who can assist us in preventing or decreasing the risk of harm. Read more about confidentiality.
Student Health Insurance
All full-time CUIMC students are required to have health insurance that provides national urgent and routine care. SHS offers student health insurance, and more information can be found on our insurance page. Even if your student waives out of the Columbia Student Health Insurance Plan, they are still eligible to use the on-campus Student Health Service for their basic health care.
