Harlem Hospital Center This is located at 506 Lenox Avenue in New York City. It is a city hospital serving mostly the underserved community in Central Harlem with a population of 151,113 people who are in the middle and lower socioeconomic classes. It is a 290 bed hospital with accredited programs in Internal Medicine, Radiology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Oral Surgery and Dentistry. It has academic affiliation with Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. It has been a Regional Level I Trauma Center since 1984 (previously designated by the New York City Emergency Medical Services and since 1989 designated by the New York State Department of Health) and a Burn Center certified by New York State Emergency Medical Services. There is always a trauma team on call directly involved in the resuscitation of all trauma patients. The team is under the supervision of the attending trauma surgeon on call.  All the faculty general surgeons are trauma attending with subspecialty assistance by board certified attendings in Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Urology, Thoracic, Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, ENT and Maxillofacial Trauma.

The General Surgery Department in Harlem is organized in the following manner:

  • Maynard Service – General Surgery, Trauma, ENT, and Neurosurgery
  • Wright Service - General Surgery, Trauma, Vascular Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Urology
  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Surgical and Burn Intensive Care Units

Orthopedic Surgery is a separate department.
