  • A required fourmonth rotation occurring in the PGY 1 year. residents who enter psychiatry residency at the PGY 2 year would have done a full year of medicine, pediatrics, family medicine or a transitional year.
  • Faculty consist of 42 full-time attending staff of the Department of Medicine, Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons and the various sub-specialties of medicine: cardiology, gastroenterology, ID, etc). Each resident is assigned to a ward that is supervised by an Attending. The psychiatry residents rotate admissions with the medicine residents.
  • Educational methods include: Clinical attending rounds, noon conferences, monthly morbidity and mortality conferences, journal club meeting, lectures and grand rounds. Resident’s in-service/continuing education is provided in a variety of ways, residents spends a total of 20 hours a week in a teaching forum, case conferences, and grand rounds. They also have individual and group supervision. Faculties are always available for consultations; case loads are carefully monitored and controlled for both breadth and variety of experience.
  • Each resident has 2 hours of group supervision weekly. A case load, while on call, consist of 8 patients with an average of 3 admissions. Call is every fourth night. psychiatry residents are usually paired with a medical resident for a minimum of 2 months; can be as long as 4 months.
