Scholarly work is a fulfilling aspect of training in psychiatry. Residents who conduct scholarly work, write literature reviews and participate in local, regional and national meetings, find it exciting and challenging.
Residents are encouraged to identify areas of interest early on residency training and will be assigned mentors with whom they can develop a relationship throughout their training.
Annually, residents are expected to work on a scholarly project and to build on their project from year to year.
During the annual GME/Medical Board sponsored Hospital Wide Research Poster Competition, residents work in teams with faculty mentorship to identify a topic, obtain their CIDI training certificate in protection of human subjects, submit an abstract, create a poster and present to judges. This is excellent practice for presentations at national and regional meetings. The posters submitted can be adapted for manuscript publication.
Each year, our department has scholarly work representation at local, regional and national meetings.
Research administrative support is provided the H+H corporation, GME biostatistician and residency program specific research assistant who can assist residents with data collection.
The Department’s affiliation with Columbia University allows resident opportunity to participate in cutting edge research in the field of psychiatry and neuroscience at the New York State Psychiatry Institute (NYSPI), Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and Columbia University Medical Center.
During PY 2017-2018, Harlem Psychiatry residents presented posters at the AACAP, IPS, AAAP and APA Annual Meetings. Additionally, residents presented workshops and a symposium at the APA Annual Meeting in NY 2018.
One of the posters, by Drs. Tanwar, Ashraf, T'Sarumi and Hicks, was cited in a medscape article on the important topic of physician suicide.
