Temporary Domestic Water Shutdown in Black, Sept. 29-30

September 24, 2015

Due to construction activity, from 10 p.m. on Tuesday September 29, 2015, until 2 a.m. on Wednesday September 30, all domestic water service in the Black Building will be temporarily unavailable. During this time, hot and cold water will be unavailable throughout the entire Black Building. Restrooms in the Black Building will also be inoperable during this time.

It is suggested that all laboratory work with hazardous materials–including chemicals, biological and radiological materials—in the Black Building be suspended while water service is unavailable due to the lack of available water for emergency eyewashes, handheld deluge hoses, and overhead emergency showers. Laboratories should perform their routine, weekly performance test on each emergency eyewash and handheld deluge hose once water services in the Black Building resumes normal operations to verify proper equipment function.

Mechanics from CUMC Facilities will be on duty while the construction activity is being completed, should any issues arise.

For any questions or concerns related to this upcoming shutdown, please contact Fernando Bedoya, senior project manager, at fb2330@columbia.edu. For any lab safety-related questions, please contact Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) at cumc-ehs@columbia.edu.
