Safety Topic: Protecting Yourself during Flu Season
For many people, the seasonal flu is just a mild illness. But for some, the flu can lead to serious infections and even hospitalization. The flu spreads easily from person to person. Here are some ways to protect yourself and those around you:
-Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the most important way to prevent the spread of the flu.
-Stay at home if you are sick. It is recommended that workers who have a fever and respiratory symptoms stay at home until 24 hours after their fever ends. But, not everyone with the flu has a fever. Other symptoms may include a runny nose, body aches, headache, or tiredness.
-Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds; use an alcohol-based hand rub if soap and water are not available.
-Avoid touching your nose, mouth, and eyes.
-Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, or cough and sneeze into your upper sleeve(s). Throw tissues into a "no-touch" wastebasket.
-Clean your hands after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
-Keep frequently touched common surfaces (e.g., telephones, computer equipment, etc.) clean.
-Stay in shape. Eat a healthy diet. Get plenty of rest, exercise, and relaxation.
Although flu activity usually begins in December, cases are being seen in New York City NOW! So, get your flu shot...it’s not too late.
