May graduates must move out by the last day of their contract or lease. Submit a Notice of Vacancy by March 30; you will receive a confirmation email with a copy of the form as your receipt.
October and February graduates have until the end of the month in which they graduate to move out of University housing. Fill out and submit a Notice of Vacancy at least 30 days before moving out.
Continuing to live in on-campus housing: If you are a May graduate who currently lives in on-campus housing and will be continuing at the medical center as a resident of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, you can apply to continue living in CUMC housing. Visit the Office of Housing Services for an application. If you're currently living in housing designated for single students, you'll be reassigned upon approval to an on-campus studio apartment. If you're currently living in student couples housing, you will maintain your current apartment. This continuation is offered for a maximum of one year.
All leaseholders who intend to vacate their room or apartment must file a Notice of Vacancy form with the Office of Housing Services at least 30 days before moving out.
All tenants are able to vacate on December 31 without penalty for breaking their lease.
If you move out after December 31, you will be penalized for breaking your lease. Only students who are going on leave, have withdrawn, completed the semester, or cannot attend classes due to medical reasons will not be penalized.

- Remove all personal belongings from your unit. Any items left behind will be discarded and a fee may be deducted from your security deposit.
- For furnished units: Return furniture to original locations.
For unfurnished Units: Remove all personal belongings, including furniture.
- Leave unit clean:
- Empty refrigerator and cabinets.
- Remove all trash.
- Sweep all floors.
- Make sure you cancel any services in your name, such as ConEdison, telephone, and cable TV.
- Return your keys to the Bard Hall (60 Haven Ave.) door attendant.
- Vacate by the last day of your lease or incur penalties.
A charge may deducted from your security deposit if the above conditions are not met.
When moving out, you can borrow a hand-truck or dolly from the door attendants in Towers 1, 2, and 3. You must provide a CUMC ID. While door attendants in other buildings cannot offer this resource, residents of other buildings are welcome to request a hand-truck or dolly at Towers 1, 2, and 3.
When using a moving company to move out of CUMC housing, you must provide the following to the Office of Housing Services:
- Copy of a certificate of insurance from an admitted insurance company. Admitted means filed with and subject to the laws and regulation of the state the company is admitted in. See an example.
- Confirmation of auto and general liability coverage with minimum liability limits of $2 million
- Confirmation of worker’s compensation coverage
- The certificate of insurance should also name the Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York as an additional insured.
Send a copy of the certificate of insurance to firstname.lastname@example.org at least two business days before your move-out date.
You are responsible for leaving the building and its premises in broom-clean condition and for removing boxes and other trash generated in the move.
Security Deposit (Towers 1, 2, and 3 and 154 Haven Ave.)
After you move out, your bedroom will be inspected for damages. The cost of repairing any damages beyond normal wear and tear, or replacing any missing appliances or furniture, will be deducted from your security deposit. Security deposits are held by a bank, and as a result, refunds can take up to 60 days to process.

Remember to update your address with all your service providers, such as your bank and Amazon.com, before you move out. A change of address must be filed with the U.S. Postal Service to ensure your mail will be forwarded. All mail will be returned to sender once you move out.
