What is available for singles versus couples?

Whether you are single or planning to live with a spouse or domestic partner, we have housing options that will suit your needs. Furthermore, we also provide disability housing accommodations for eligible students.

Singles

From dorm room accommodations in Bard Hall, Apartment living in the towers and the Georgian building or studios over at 154 Haven Ave, your options are many.

Who will my roommates be?

We make assignments based on our priority structure, detailed above. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate any roommate requests, although you can indicate any preferences on your housing application.

If you are offered a room within a multiple occupancy apartment, you may be housed with students of different schools or programs and with different graduation dates. We will only assign students of the same gender to multiple occupancy apartments. Roommate information will be available and can be provided, upon request, two to three weeks before your move-in date.

If you are interested in co-ed living, check out our apartment share vacancies.

Couples

You can apply for couples housing if you are married or in a domestic partnership and will be enrolled as a full-time student. Couples housing must be occupied by both the student and your spouse or domestic partner. We have one-bedroom apartments in the Towers, 154 Haven Ave., and Georgian Residence, depending on availability.

Couples housing is available to married couples and couples in domestic partnerships. Domestic partners are defined as two individuals who live together in a long-term relationship of indefinite duration, have an exclusive commitment to each other’s welfare, and share financial obligations.

Confirming Couple Status

You must provide documentation in order to qualify as a married couple or domestic partners.

If you are married, a copy of your marriage certificate can qualify you for couples housing. A New York City Affidavit of Domestic Partnership is also acceptable. If your state offers a domestic partnership affidavit, we can accept that in place of a New York City one.

If you are not married, you'll need to submit the notarized  Columbia University Designation of Partner form along with one of the following forms of proof:

  • A joint mortgage or lease
  • A designation of domestic partner as primary beneficiary for life insurance or retirement benefits
  • A designation of domestic partner as primary beneficiary in your will
  • Assignment of durable property or health care power of attorney to domestic partner
  • Document showing ownership of a joint bank account or joint credit card account.

The documentation should be emailed to cumc.housing@columbia.edu  once you have been offered and accepted your couples housing offer. Please note, falsely certifying status may result in disciplinary action.

Am I guaranteed housing? How do you decide who gets an offer?

All single VP&S (MD or MD-PhD only) and single GSAS applicants are guaranteed dormitory-style accommodations in Bard Hall. However, these applicants may apply for housing in other residential buildings: Georgian Residence; Towers 1, 2, and 3; and 154 Haven Ave. Accommodations in other buildings are assigned based on availability.

To ensure fairness, housing is not first-come, first-served. We assign housing based on the applicant’s home address, based on the following priorities:

  1. International applicants
  2. Applicants within the United States coming from farthest west, then moving eastward
  3. Applicants from the tristate area (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut)

The number and types of student housing units available for rent at any given time varies throughout the year. We can't guarantee that you will be housed in accommodations that satisfy your first preference.

I received a housing offer. What happens next?

You will receive one housing offer via email. Due to the high demand for housing, we can only offer one housing option.

Please respond within two business days to accept or decline our offer. Failure to respond within that time will lead to the cancelation of your offer and reassignment of the unit. If you applied for couples housing, documentation in support of your status should be emailed to cumc.housing@columbia.edu. As a reminder, falsely certifying status may result in disciplinary action.

During the summer months, rooms are unavailable for viewing. Some are occupied by current tenants, and others are being refreshed to prepare them for your arrival.

Already accepted? Learn about our leases and contracts and moving in.

I didn’t receive a housing offer. What should I do?

If you do not receive on-campus housing or elect to live off-campus, you can search for apartments, rooms, and roommates on the Off-Campus Housing Assistance website. For further assistance in finding off-campus housing, email Rocío Calixto, leasing agent, at rc2774@cumc.columbia.edu.

You can also participate in our reapplication process and review our apartment share vacancies.
