Harris Schaer works to integrate sustainable and energy efficient design into Columbia University Medical Center's construction projects, identify innovative new technologies, and track CUMC's environmental impact. Before joining CUMC, Harris worked with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, where he led commercial real estate programs for the New York City area. He has lectured on energy efficiency in commercial buildings at Columbia University and served on the Urban Green Council's Building Resiliency Task Force.
Harris received a BS in physics from the University of Chicago. He visited Iceland as a Fulbright Scholar, where he advanced efforts dedicated to transitioning Iceland’s transportation sector to hydrogen produced from locally abundant renewable resources. He received a MS in solid-state physics from the University of Iceland for his thesis on hydrogen storage. His hobbies include tall ship sailing and glass blowing.
