Black Bldg. temporary electrical shutdown, Feb. 24-25

February 17, 2017

A temporary electrical shutdown affecting normal power to research spaces and laboratories throughout the Black Building has been rescheduled to take place from 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, until 2 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, to allow for maintenance. All affected systems will automatically transfer to emergency power. Please be advised, at the beginning and end of the transfer, equipment will see a momentary power disruption. The chemical fume-hood ventilation system will be unavailable throughout the building during the temporary shutdown. Building occupants are also advised to use the passenger elevators located in the adjacent College of Physicians Surgeons building during the temporary shutdown.

In preparation for the upcoming shutdown, please take the following precautionary steps before you leave on Friday, Feb. 24:

  • Save all files and important documents.
  • Completely turn off all computers and laptops.
  • Turn off all other electronic devices and non-essential laboratory equipment.
  • Tightly seal all containers in fume hoods or remove and safely store them elsewhere in the lab.
  • Shut off all gas valves servicing the fume hoods.

Laboratories are strongly encouraged to suspend all work involving hazardous materials for the duration of the shutdown. Fume hoods should not be used until they have been recertified. Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) will be on site Monday, Feb. 27, beginning at 8 a.m., to recertify the hoods.

For issues in laboratories during the temporary shutdown, please call Public Safety at 305-8100 and a mechanic will be dispatched to address the issue. If you have questions in advance of the shutdown, please contact CUMC Facilities Management at cumc.facilities@columbia.edu.
