New Students and Tenants

Am I guaranteed housing at Columbia University Medical Center?

Because the number and type of student housing units available for rent at any given time varies throughout the year, we can't guarantee that you'll be housed in accommodations that satisfy your first choice of type, location, and price range.

How do I request disability housing accommodations?

We provide accommodations for students whose disabilities substantially limit their ability to live in CUMC’s traditional housing units. Review our guidelines on disability housing.

What is the priority for assigning housing?

To ensure fair housing for as many CUMC students as possible, the Office of Housing Services uses the following priorities for housing assignments:

  • Priority 1: International applicants
  • Priority 2: Applicants within the United States coming from farthest away, then moving eastward
  • Priority 3: Applicants from the tristate area (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut)

I’m a new student or new tenant and was not assigned housing. Can I re-apply?

If you are a registered full-time student on the CUMC campus, you qualify for our reapplication process, which takes place from September 1-30.

Does CUMC offer housing for postdoctoral research fellows and research scientists?

Can I park on-campus?

Due to limited availability, parking in CUMC facilities is not available to students. If you are commuting and are enrolled in Saturday classes, you may park from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays on class days only. A current class schedule must be provided. I’m a current student who lives off campus—how do I apply for on-campus housing at CUMC?

If you are currently enrolled in the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, or Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, you can apply for CUMC housing online as a single student. If you're seeking couples accommodations, apply for CUMC couples housing.

What do I do if I lose my key?

  • Bard Hall and Georgian Residents: If you lose your key during business hours (9 a.m.-5 p.m.), you can request a replacement key for $10 per key. If you lose your key after hours, see your superintendent or Resident Advisor to request access. You may be charged $50.
  • Towers 1, 2, 3; 154 Haven; and 390 Fort Washington Residents: If you lose your key during business hours (9 a.m.-5 p.m.), you can request a replacement key by submitting a work order. The cost for ranges from $5 -30. If you lose your key after hours, see your superintendent or resident advisor to allow you access. You may be charged $50.

Can I remove any of the furniture that is provided in my room?

You may be able to remove furniture on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the Office of Housing Services.

Do I have to vacate my residence hall during the winter break?

No, you can stay for the duration of the break.

Can I stay for the summer in Georgian Residence, Bard Hall, or apartment housing?

If you reside in Bard Hall or Georgian Residence, you can stay during the summer if you are taking classes or working in a laboratory or department. Visit the Office of Housing Services to complete and submit a summer application.

If you are in apartment housing, you may stay during the summer as long as you renew your lease.

If I am graduating, can I stay for the summer in Georgian, Bard Hall, or apartment housing?

May graduates must move out by the last day of their contract or lease. October and February graduates have until the end of the month in which they graduate to move out of CUMC housing.

May graduates who currently reside in on-campus housing and will be continuing at CUMC as residents of Columbia University Medical Center/NewYork-Presbyterian can apply to continue living in CUMC housing by submitting an application from the Office of Housing Services. This continuation is subject to availability and is offered for a maximum of one year. If you're seeking to continue living in couples housing, you may only do so in a studio or one-bedroom apartment; we cannot offer two- or four-bedroom units.

The storage companies listed above are recommended by Columbia University's Morningside campus. The CUMC Office of Housing Services has no affiliation with any of these companies and has provided this information solely for your convenience.

Where can I borrow a hand-truck or dolly for large packages?

Please see the door attendants in Towers 1, 2, and 3 to borrow a hand-truck or dolly. You must provide a CUMC ID. While door attendants in other buildings cannot offer this resource, residents of other buildings are welcome to request a hand-truck or dolly at Towers 1, 2, and 3.

When I vacate, when do I get my deposit back?

Deposits are forwarded within two months. You must provide us with a Notice of Vacancy form with a forwarding address. Learn more about moving out.

Accommodations

What furniture is provided in the rooms and apartments?

All furnished rooms are provided with a twin extra-long bed, desk, bookshelf, chair, and dresser. 154 Haven Ave. studios have full-size beds, and 390 Fort Washington Ave. studios have full-size Murphy beds. Read more on our rates page.

Is couples housing furnished or unfurnished?

With the exception of the apartments at 154 Haven Ave., couples apartments are all unfurnished.

Are the residence halls and campus apartments pet-friendly?

Unfortunately, there is a no pet policy in all medical center buildings.

Are the residence halls and apartments family-friendly?

Couples who have children often opt to live in our full-size one-bedroom apartments. However, while there is housing available for couples and their children, the CUMC Office of Housing Services cannot, unfortunately offer housing for parents or siblings.

Contracts and Leases

I missed my scheduled lease signing appointment—what are my next steps?

I’m a current student who lives on campus—how do I renew my CUMC housing contract?

You will receive a lease renewal contract or residence hall renewal contract in early spring.

When does my lease end in the Towers 1, 2, 3; 154 Haven Ave.; or 390 Fort Washington Ave.?

All student leases for Towers 1, 2, and 3 and 154 Haven Ave. end on May 31. Postdoctoral leases for 390 Fort Washington Ave. end on June 30.

If you are enrolled in the Periodontics, Endodontics, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, or Advanced Education in General Dentistry graduate programs at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, your lease ends on June 30.

Is there a penalty for breaking my lease or contract?

If you live in apartment housing, you will be penalized for breaking your lease. Notify us at least 30 days in advance of your move-out date by completing and submitting a Notice of Vacancy form. Only students in the following situations will not be penalized: Students who are going on leave, have withdrawn, completed the semester, or cannot attend classes due to medical reasons.

If you live in Bard Hall or Georgian Residence, you will be penalized for breaking your housing contract if you are moving off-campus. If you are transferring to another building on campus, you will not be penalized.

Rent and Billing

Where do I submit my first month’s rent and security deposit?

You'll pay your first month’s rent and security deposit at your lease-signing appointment, which takes place in the Office of Housing Services. Make any checks and money orders out to Columbia University. Learn more about signing your lease.

After you move in, mail all subsequent rent payments to the address listed on your first month’s rent bill.

Who can I talk to about my rent bill?

If you have questions about the amount of your bill, contact the Columbia University Office of the Controller at 212-854-1009.

Is there an increase in my rent every year? If so, how much?

Students living in CUMC housing may be subject to an annual increase. Increases are typically three percent and take into consideration current market prices. Rent increases are noted on lease renewal documents, which are sent to you each year in the early spring.
