Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)

Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) are an integral part of Columbia University Irving Medical Center's hazard communication program. Workers who handle hazardous chemicals as part of their job must be familiar with the locations of SDSs in their work area and their format and contents. Workers must read SDSs before starting a job.

SDSs provide:

  • A summary of health hazards for a chemical
  • Procedures for handling the chemical in a safe manner
  • Guidance in proper storage and disposal of the chemical
  • First aid information for the chemical
