Fort Washington Street Closure, Dec. 12

Fort Washington Avenue, between West 165th and West 168th Streets, will be closed from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12 (or Sunday Dec. 13 in case of weather conditions), due to the delivery and installation of air handling equipment in the William Black Building. Flag people and temporary barricades will be available at each intersection.

Highlights of what to expect:

  • Emergency Access: Full access to Emergency Room will be maintained at all times via the Broadway and 168th Street intersection. Emergency exits located in Eye Institute, Harkness, Milstein and Irving Pavilion also will not be affected. Restricted emergency vehicle access will be maintained between 165th Street and Milstein Driveway. Additionally, a single lane for emergency vehicle access will be provided on Fort Washington Avenue.
  • Pedestrian Traffic: There will be a partial sidewalk closure on the east side of Fort Washington Avenue; pedestrian traffic will be diverted to west side of the sidewalk. Full pedestrian access to Milstein driveway/Main Entrance, Harkness Pavilion, Eye Institute, and Irving Pavilion will be maintained at all times. However, there will be brief periods in which pedestrian traffic between 168th Street and Milstein driveway will be stopped during each lift.
  • Vehicular Traffic: Non-emergency vehicular traffic on Fort Washington Avenue, between 165th Street and 168th Street will be diverted to Broadway. This will not affect the CUIMC loading dock for deliveries and pickups in the William Black Building.

Although we are excited about this renovation, we recognize it may create challenges for patients, visitors, and staff, and we will keep you informed as this project progresses.
