Study Participation
Phase II Participation (October 12 – December 2, 2011)
- This Fall select NHSN hospitals will receive an invitation to participate in the P-NICER Study.
- Participation in the study involves 2 steps:
Step 1: Joining the PNICER NHSN Group
- We are asking hospitals to share data that they already contribute to NHSN by joining our PNICER NHSN Group.
- We are not asking for any patient identifiers.
- It will take 5-10 minutes in total to join the NHSN group and choose the types of infection and denominator data that the hospital is willing to share with us.
Step 2: Completing the online PNICER Survey
- We are asking IPs to complete a web-based survey for their department that will take about 25 to 35 minutes to complete.
- This survey will ask questions about infection control processes and staffing, as well as resources to the infection control department.
- Those hospitals that complete both steps will be entered into a lottery for $100 AMEX gift cards. 15 $100 AMEX gift cards (120 AMEX gift cards in total) will be given each week and each participant’s name will remain in the lottery for the entire survey period. The earlier the survey is submitted, the more opportunities the participant will have to win!
- This study has been approved by the Columbia University Medical Center Institutional Review Board (IRB). View our IRB approval letter and our Agreement letter which outlines the steps we are taking to safeguard your data.
- IRB approval from individual hospitals is not needed to participate.

Phase I Participation
- In Phase I of the study, we conducted qualitative in-depth interviews in 12 NHSN hospitals around the country.
- These interviews were conducted with multiple hospital personnel including Infection Preventionists, Hospital Epidemiologists, Administrators, Nurses and ancillary service personnel.
