The Columbia University Cardiopulmonary Sleep and Ventilatory Disorders Center is recognized as a major academic patient care, teaching, and research center of the Department of Medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Its faculty includes thought leaders in programmatic, educational, and research aspects of sleep medicine and physiology, who participate in funded cutting edge clinical research.
A major aspect of the Sleep Center is its numerous major clinical and research collaborations, including with the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Research Center. In collaboration with Dr. Hiroshi Mitsumoto, Director of the ALS Center; Dr. Donna Mancini, Medical Director of Heart Transplantation; Dr. Byron Thomashow, Medical Director of the Jo-Ann LeBuhn Center for Chest Disease and Respiratory Failure; and Dr. Matthew Bartels of the Departmental of Rehabilitation Medicine, Sleep Center faculty are involved in novel funded investigations of the optimal non-invasive ventilatory management of patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular and respiratory disorders, and in patients with heart failure; the associations of oxidative stress markers with the pathogenesis and treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; the prevalence and treatment of sleep disordered breathing in patients with COPD and in pregnancy; and the role of novel methods of assessment and treatment of ventilatory failure in patients with COPD and neuromuscular disorders.
