Medical Intensive Care Units
Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
A major tertiary referral center for complex critically ill patients in our region, we take care of over 1300 patients each year in our two 24/7, 12-bed intensive care units. We provide state-of-the-art critical care with cutting-edge technology and therapy for critical illnesses ranging from refractory hypoxemic respiratory failure to septic shock to fulminant liver failure. Each team is supervised by a dedicated Pulmonary/Critical Care Attending and fellow team, and is supported by a dedicated MICU PharmD. We have an attending intensivist providing direct supervision of care at all times with in-hospital coverage 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. One unit is staffed by Internal Medicine residents and the other is fully staffed by highly trained nurse practitioners and physician assistants, who undergo a thorough critical care curriculum and specialized training in areas such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and critical care ultrasound. In addition, we have a highly skilled, motivated and dedicated multidisciplinary MICU staff of nurses, respiratory therapists, nutritionists, physical, occupational and speech therapists, and social workers, all working to support our patients’ and their families while providing the best possible bedside care.
Medical ECMO Program
The Columbia Medical ECMO Program is one of the only adult ECMO programs in the world focused on providing ECMO for medical indications such as hypoxemic or hypercapneic respiratory failure – both as bridge to recovery or bridge to lung transplant – as well as pulmonary hypertension and other critical conditions that may be best managed with this advanced technology. The program is coordinated with the adult Surgical ECMO Program that serves the needs primarily of post-operative patients.
Early Mobilization Initiative
Clinical evidence indicates that physical activity in the ICU significantly improves outcomes such as reduced functional impairment and sedation-associated delirium, as well as improved quality of life after discharge. Our team of dedicated physical, occupational, speech, and respiratory therapists, along with the help of our nurses, and staff provide rehabilitation therapy early on in our patients ICU course, expediting recovery of their physical function and quality of life after hospitalization.
