Faculty Club Renamed to Honor Former P&S Dean
The Faculty Club has been renamed the Donald F. Tapley Faculty Club in honor of the late Donald F. Tapley, M.D., dean of the College of Physicians & Surgeons from 1973-1984 and, at the time of his death in 1999, senior deputy vice president for the Health Sciences and Alumni Professor. A faculty member since 1956, Dr. Tapley’s influence was deeply felt. He generated considerable support for facilities, young researchers, and students. As dean, he began a series of meetings with P&S alumni throughout the nation; annual giving from alumni doubled during this time. Among his legacies is “The Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Complete Home Medical Guide,” published in 1985. Proceeds from sales of this book go to fund P&S scholarships.
Pictured at the Jan. 17 dedication, sponsored by P&S and the P&S Alumni Association, are, from left: back row, Sarah Styles, Dr. Tapley’s daughter; Gil Styles, son-in-law; Elisabeth Tapley, daughter, and administrative director in the infectious disease division. Front row, Roberto Jerez, manager, The Donald F. Tapley Faculty Club; Jacqueline Bello, M.D., president, P&S Alumni Association; Caroline Tapley, Dr. Tapley’s wife; Tom Morris, M.D., former P&S interim dean; and Kate Tapley, daughter.
