Web Site for Center of Excellence for Cultural Competence

The New York State Psychiatric Institute’s Center of Excellence for Cultural Competence has a Web site that gives families, providers, policy-makers, researchers, and the general public access to information about the center’s projects and the latest research and advances in culturally and linguistically competent mental health care.

The Web site – www.nyspi.org/culturalcompetence – also provides a forum for feedback from community members and other advisers.

“Providing the best possible help to the seriously mentally ill in underserved ethnic and linguistic communities means first addressing treatment within a framework that is sensitive to the cultural and linguistic characteristics that define these groups,” says, Roberto Lewis-Fernández, M.D., associate professor of clinical psychiatry and director of the center.

The center works with mental health providers, families, community and faith-based organizations, policy-makers, and mental health service researchers to develop, adapt, and evaluate evidence-based approaches meant to improve the access and quality of mental health services to underserved populations throughout the state of New York.
