Alexander Garcia, M.D., Retired Chair of Orthopedic Surgery

Alexander Garcia, M.D., died Feb. 5, 2012, at age 92. He was the Frank E. Stinchfield Professor Emeritus of Orthopedic Surgery and served as chair of orthopedic surgery and the seventh director of the New York Orthopedic Hospital from 1976 to 1983.

During his tenure as chair, Dr. Garcia set up formal cooperation with Helen Hayes Hospital and was a founding member of the Columbia-Presbyterian East Side Medical Associates when it opened in midtown in 1982.

A resident of Shelter Island since 1958, Dr. Garcia was the subject of a March Shelter Island newspaper remembrance written by his friend, Janet Roach. The remembrance is online here.
