Peter CarmelPeter W. Carmel, a pediatric neurosurgeon and for­mer longtime P&S faculty member, became president of the American Medical Association in June 2011. An article about Dr. Carmel appears online in American Medical News. A member of the AMA House of Delegates for 17 years, Dr. Carmel also has served as president of the AMA Foundation. He has served in numerous posi­tions in both the American Association of Neuro­logical Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He completed his residency in neuro­surgery at the Neurological Institute. While at P&S, he was professor of neurological surgery, founded the neuroendocrine lab within the Institute for the Study of Human Reproduction in 1969, and was founding chief of the pediatric neurosurgery divi­sion. He chairs the Department of Neuro­logical Surgery at the New Jersey Medical School and is co-medical director of the Neurological Insti­tute of New Jersey.
