Peter W. Carmel, a pediatric neurosurgeon and former longtime P&S faculty member, became president of the American Medical Association in June 2011. An article about Dr. Carmel appears online in American Medical News. A member of the AMA House of Delegates for 17 years, Dr. Carmel also has served as president of the AMA Foundation. He has served in numerous positions in both the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at the Neurological Institute. While at P&S, he was professor of neurological surgery, founded the neuroendocrine lab within the Institute for the Study of Human Reproduction in 1969, and was founding chief of the pediatric neurosurgery division. He chairs the Department of Neurological Surgery at the New Jersey Medical School and is co-medical director of the Neurological Institute of New Jersey.
