Shih-hsun Ngai, M.D.
Dr. Shih-hsun Ngai, professor emeritus of anesthesiology and pharmacology and the second chairman of anesthesiology at P&S, died July 8, 1999. A graduate of National Central University Medical School in China, Dr. Ngai arrived in North America from China in 1946 and, after a year in Toronto and a year in Chicago, reported to Virginia Apgar'33 in 1948 as a second-year anesthesiology resident.

He was a founding member of the Department of Anesthesiology and served as chairman from 1970 to 1973. He rose through the faculty ranks to become full professor of anesthesiology in 1965. He was named professor of pharmacology in 1974. He retired in 1988.

His research contributions in neuroscience included his pioneering studies with S.C. Wang on the central control of respiration.
