Dean Herbert Pardes, the outgoing chairman of the Association
of American Medical Colleges, was toasted by P&S alumni and
friends at a dinner in his honor at the San Francisco Hilton Nov.
7 in conjunction with the association's annual meeting. At the
meeting, Dr. Pardes delivered a substantive and hard-hitting
speech on "The Future of the Academic Medical Center in the Era
of Managed Care." He urged academic medical centers to "become
aggressive at educating the public and policy-makers on who they
are and what they do to preserve the health of the nation," and
to take action "to protect their revenue sources in the changing
health care delivery system." While the nation favors medical
research in an abstract way, he pointed out, "the American
people do not understand just what an academic medical center
is" or how that role affects the quality of their care.
