P&S Journal: Fall 1996, Vol.16, No.3
1996 Residency Match

About 40 percent of the 137 P&S graduates who have begun residencies chose primary care residencies, including 10 in family practice residencies from Florida to California to Maine. The remaining 127 graduates who matched in the National Resident Matching Program or specialty matching programs include 30 in internal medicine, six in primary care medicine, one in medicine-pediatrics, and nine in pediatrics.

In the National Resident Matching Program results announced in March, 54.4 percent of medical school seniors participating in the program matched to residency training in family practice, internal medicine, or pediatrics. Disciplines experiencing declines in residency matches were anesthesiology (a 53.8 percent drop from last year) and diagnostic radiology (a 26.6 percent decline). Both also had declines in the number of matches to second-year residency programs (61.8 percent in anesthesiology and 20.3 percent in radiology). One P&S graduate matched into an anesthesiology residency to follow a transitional first year; nine P&S graduates matched into radiology residencies following first-year medicine residencies.

At P&S, the most popular residency choices after medicine were surgery (12 matches), family practice (10 matches), pediatrics (9 matches), radiology (9 matches), emergency medicine (8 matches), orthopedic surgery (8 matches), neurosurgery (7 matches), and obstetrics and gynecology (7 matches).
