Alumni Association Activities
The Alumni Association and the Department of Surgery co-hosted a cocktail reception Oct. 12 at the Chicago Hilton in conjunction with the meeting of the American College of Surgeons. Alumni and faculty mingled and exchanged memories and prognoses for the future of surgery.
Frank Smith'62 hosted a brunch Oct. 23 for Houston area alumni at a popular downtown restaurant. Richard Pierson Jr.'55, co-chairman of the regional representatives committee, was on hand along with Marianne Wolff'52 representing the Alumni Office. The guest speaker, Allan Rosenfield'59, the Joseph Delamar Professor and Dean of Columbia's School of Public Health, brought local alumni up to date on recent changes at the Health Sciences campus, including new faculty recruitment, construction and renovation of the physical plant, and the acquisition of a new 5 Tesla magnet for the MRI and the new PET scanner facility. He addressed the problem of the "pressures of the health care reform environment" on New York State and New York City in the absence of any accepted national legislation. He also spoke on the recent meeting of the World Health Organization in Cairo, Egypt, which he attended and at which problems of population control were addressed.
