John D. Rainer'51
P&S Professor of Clinical Psychiatry
I was a fourth-year medical student at P&S rotating on the gynecology service; the preceding month I had been on obstetrics. It was March 5, 1951, and my wife, Barbara, was giving birth to our second child on the floor above. Virginia Apgar, professor of anesthesiology, had graciously offered to do the caudal anesthesia.
In those days, fathers were not present in the delivery room, so it was my classmates who kept me informed. But it was Virginia Apgar who first came down to tell me that it was a boy, and that mother and son were doing fine! Soon after, a crib rolled down with Baby Boy Rainer. Over 40 years later, I am still at P&S, while Peter is a well-known movie critic on the West Coast.
