Samuel Bard Associates
P&S supporters, including alumni, faculty, and friends, braved a fall chill and a potential traffic jam caused by President Clinton's appearance nearby to attend the 12th annual dinner of the Samuel Bard Associates Oct. 28 in the United Nations Delegates Dining Room. The event celebrates the role of a select group of people whose ongoing generosity helps ensure the strength of P&S.
The guest speaker was P. Roy Vagelos'54, chairman and CEO of Merck & Co., one of the nation's largest pharmaceutical firms. Dr. Vagelos, a member of the Columbia University Health Sciences Advisory Council, cited the national debate on health care reform as "the most important political debate of this decade." While agreeing with President Clinton's espoused goals of "security, simplicity, savings, choice, quality, and responsibility" in health care delivery, he criticized the White House health plan for its administrative complexity and for failing to take into account the importance of innovation and discovery.
