Students Find Learning Beyond the Classroom
Summer Community Service
In volunteering as first-year medical students in the Young Men's Clinic, Ben Phillips'94 and Frank David'96 say they observed a multitude of community-based programs that could be advanced by medical student participation.
"We feel that the opportunity to conduct community service should be held to the same regard as research," says Mr. David, "and we'd like to see community health care become competitive with summer research fellowships."
Mr. David and Mr. Phillips'94 developed a proposal to create a summer fellowship for community service work. The Arnold P. Gold Foundation has agreed to award stipends to six students interested in committing their summer to community service. A selection committee is reviewing project ideas.
