Malawi Dr. Omolara Thomas, a fellow in General Pediatrics and an Assistant Attending in Clinical Pediatrics is working with the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative, providing direct patient care of HIV-exposed infants and HIV infected children. In partnership with the Ministry of Health of Malawi, she is providing training and mentorship to local health workers in rural health facilities throughout northern Malawi to scale up pediatric HIV care in the country. As part of her work Dr. Thomas is involved with an ongoing NIH longitudinal study assessing developmental disability in Zulu school-age children being conducted through a partnership with Columbia University and the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The extreme shortage of health professionals and resource limitation she viewed in all of these countries fueled her desire to pursue a career devoted to work within Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly focused on increasing access to basic primary healthcare.
