Center for Biomathematics

Rajesekhar Ramakrishnan, ScD, Director of the Center for Biomathematics

The Center for Biomathematics provides statistical and mathematical modeling assistance to those performing clinical and basic science research inside as well as outside the Department of Pediatrics. The division works with researchers from the outset of their project, helping to ensure that studies have adequate statistical power to answer the posed questions and test the stated hypotheses. We also analyze the collected data with appropriate statistical procedures.

Within Pediatrics we collaborate actively with members of other divisions including Neonatology, Molecular Genetics, and Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. Outside of Pediatrics, we have ongoing collaborations with faculty in the divisions of Cardiology and Preventive Medicine and Nutrition in the Department of Medicine, with the Institute of Human Nutrition, with the CTSA, and with investigators outside Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC).

Center director Rajasekhar Ramakrishnan, ScD, teaches in the graduate program in the Institute of Human Nutrition and reviews protocols as the biostatistician in the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) at the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.

Dr. Ramakrishnan also runs a clinical research elective, taken by nearly all second-year Pediatrics residents, designed to help them finalize their resident research project proposals from the viewpoint of power analysis and to provide them with the statistical tools they need to be self-sufficient.

More detail on the many resources we offer to researchers at CUIMC can be found on our center website.
