CUSON welcomes Dr. Vivian Taylor, new Associate Dean for Diversity and Cultural Affairs. Dr. Taylor will be joining the faculty on January 7, 2013.

I am delighted to announce that Vivian Taylor will become the Associate Dean for Diversity and Cultural Affairs at Columbia University School of Nursing effective January 7, 2013.

Currently Dr. Taylor serves as Vice President of Community Development and Chief of Staff at Barnard College. After more than 25 years of service, she will be stepping down at the end of the year. In a letter to the Barnard community President Debora Spar writes that “Vivian has changed the heart and the landscape of this College. She has served in more ways, and with more exuberance, than any one letter can name.”

Throughout her career, Dr. Taylor has been committed to creating and sustaining diversity in Barnard’s staff, faculty and student body. She has shown leadership and vision in developing and implementing programs that helped to bring equity, access and support to underrepresented and marginalized members of society. Her strong leadership abilities, spirited dedication, and skills in building partnerships with community organizations have served Barnard well. We are excited that she is now bringing her formidable talents and experience to the School of Nursing, where she will head diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Dr. Taylor has held a wide variety of positions at Barnard, including Higher Education Opportunity Program Director, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Sophomore Class Dean, and Associate Dean of the College for Academic Success and Enrichment Programs. Under her guidance, the College has implemented many programs designed to help under-resourced and/or economically disadvantaged students reach their full potential.

The School of Nursing is incredibly fortunate to attract someone of Dr. Taylor’s caliber, and we look forward to welcoming her in January.
