We are committed to making a Columbia University School of Nursing education affordable to every student. Regardless of your family income, consider applying for financial aid. Columbia University School of Nursing offers more than $3.5 million in grant and scholarship assistance, participates in all federal aid programs, and offers an array of alternative financing and payment plans designed to meet your needs.

We take many factors into consideration, including financial need and academic promise, when determining our awards. It is the intent of the school to ensure that students meeting admission requirements will have sufficient funds to pursue and complete their nursing education.

Do I Qualify for Financial Aid?

Here is a list of the minimum requirements you need to meet to be considered for financial aid through the School of Nursing Office of Financial Aid:

  • You are a U.S. citizen, an eligible non-citizen.
  • You have a valid Social Security Number
  • You have registered with Selective Service if you are male and between the ages of 18-25.
  • You have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) Certificate.
  • You are enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student working toward a degree or certificate.
  • You don't have a drug conviction for an offense that occurred while receiving federal student aid (such as grants, loans, or work-study).
  • You don't owe a refund on a federal grant; or you are not in default on a federal student loan.

How do I apply for financial aid?

U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens who wish to be considered for financial aid are required to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To complete your FAFSA, you will need Columbia University's School Code: 002707.

The FAFSA is available on January 1 each year. The FAFSA is used to determine aid eligibility for the specific academic year (fall, spring, and summer term) for which the application is completed and need to be completed for each academic year that you wish to apply for aid.  The priority deadline for the 2014-15 academic year (summer 2014, fall 2014, spring 2015) is February 15th for new ETP students. If you file after February 15th, some types of financial aid may be limited.

Undergraduate students who are determined to be dependent based on the FAFSA Application will be required to supply parents’ information on their application.

International students do not complete a FAFSA. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid about potential funding options.

TIPS FOR COMPLETING THE FAFSA:

Financial aid applicants are required to directly import tax filing information into the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. The tool, available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, simplifies the application process and prevents data entry errors. It is the preferred method for providing the required tax information.

Verification Process

Approximately one-third of all financial aid applicants are selected by either the U.S. Department of Education or the Office of Financial Aid to verify the accuracy of information provided on the FAFSA. If you have been selected for verification, your offer of assistance is tentative, pending the completion of the verification process. If you have been selected for verification by the U.S. Department of Education, you are notified as soon as you complete the FAFSA, on your Student Aid Report (SAR). It is important that any information requested on your SAR is submitted to the Financial Aid office immediately to avoid delays on your financial aid package or the disbursement of your financial aid awards. If you are selected for verification by the school, you will be contacted by the Financial Aid office.

Verification is a process required by the federal government that is intended to improve the accuracy of the information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). College financial aid offices may not disburse federal student aid until the verification process is complete. 

To help us ensure that your financial aid awards are as accurate as possible, there are some steps you can take to help us get the most accurate information about your income at the earliest possible date. Some students think they have to wait until tax returns are filed before they can submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), but this is not the case at all. You may submit your FAFSA any time after January 1, using estimated tax information.

If your FAFSA is based on estimated tax information, the financial aid awards you are offered will be assigned a “conditional” status. After you've submitted your tax returns, we encourage you to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to update the FAFSA with your tax information. This tool allows your tax information to be transferred directly to your FAFSA from the IRS website and is one less step for you to take.

If your tax filing status reported on the FAFSA reflects a filed tax return, and your awards are still conditional, you may have been selected for verification. The federal regulations governing aid require that Columbia University School of Nursing verify a portion of the student population to ensure the information reported on the FAFSA is accurate. If we determine that there are differences between the FAFSA information and the information we collect during our review, we are required to correct it.

New and Returning Graduate Students

Returning students must renew their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each academic year. The FAFSA is designed for students who applied for aid the previous year. To access your Renewal FAFSA data, you will need your Federal Student Aid PIN. If you have previously received a PIN but have lost or forgotten it, please request a duplicate PIN . For continuing students, the FAFSA is due March 15th of each year.

All graduates students must complete a “Graduate Student Supplemental Financial Aid Form”.
This form is available on the financial aid system, NetPartner. To access NetPartner, you will need your Columbia University personal identification number (also known as the C#, Student ID, or PID).

  • New students receive the PID from the Admissions office. It is emailed to applicants after an applicant has been offered enrollment. Returning or continuing students can find their PID on SSOL.
  • Once you log into SSOL, click on the top left link Academic Profile.
  • ¬†Underneath viewing options, change from “hide my name and personal data” to “show my name and personal data”.
  • Click on right link, Update View. Under “Identifiers” you will see PID: C##########.
  • Once you login to NetPartner, copy your PID to the Student ID. Your Password is your date of birth written as MMDDYYYY.

The Graduate Supplemental Financial Aid Form must be completed before you are able to receive a financial aid package. The form will ask for your credit allocations for each term enrolled and if you are requesting student health insurance. You will need to meet with your program director each year and review your program plan and credit allocations for each term are correct.
