Nursing integration is the capstone immersion experience designed to provide the student with an opportunity to synthesize the knowledge and skills acquired during previous coursework. The student will build clinical reasoning and develop beginning proficiency in patient management and evaluation through assignments in increasingly complex patient care settings. Working closely with staff and faculty, the student will gain the confidence and skill needed to function as a novice nurse who is a designer, manager and coordinator of care.

Community Service Learning Project

Service learning is a means for students to be involved in service that is relevant to them personally and to their academic activities. It is designed to explore the societal issues addressed by a particular agency and to allow students to contribute directly to the agency. With the help of the agency contact person, you will propose a project in which you will be actively engaged for the minimum of 60 hours of service. The expectation is that this service learning commitment will be mutually beneficial to both the agency and the student. As a requirement for graduation, each nursing student is required to commit to a minimum of 60 hours of community service learning. The hours are to be completed during the fall semester and finish prior to integration. You must notify the Coordinator of Student Service Learning Placements your project plan by set deadline. No student can be engaged in any invasive procedures with patients or research requiring internal review board (IRB) approval without prior approval from the Coordinator of Service Learning Placements.

This clinical nursing residency is designed for post-baccalaureate nursing students. It consists of clinical experiences in health care facilities that focus on strengthening and broadening the baccalaureate clinical attributes inpatient care decision making and psychomotor skills. It is a Prerequisite to graduate level clinical specialty programs for students with no work experience. The student engages in an intensive clinical experience ranging from 28-40 hours per week. Specific outcome objectives are identified by the program director of the clinical specialty master’s program track that the student wishes to enter. The student meets regularly with the specialty master’s program director or designee to discuss the clinical experience and identify progress in meeting the competencies. Clinical logs, seminars and reaction papers are requirements for completion.

The primary purposes of this course are to cover core principles of human physiology, to facilitate an understanding of the normal function of the major organ systems of the body, and to prepare students for Pathophysiology. Particular focus will be placed on the concept of homeostasis and the fundamental mechanics and regulation of each system. Success in this course will require the use of several skills. The ability to assimilate and recall a significant amount of information accurately will be extremely important. Additionally, success in this course will require integration of knowledge, the ability to interpret physiological data, and an understanding of the dynamic relationship between components of any system and how it interacts with other systems.

This course focuses on the physiological mechanisms relevant to the maternal experience, embryonic development, fetal life, and the neonatal period. We will examine the normal adaptations in maternal physiology that accommodates pregnancy, the acute changes that occur during labor and delivery, and the physiology of the maternal postpartum state. Development of the conceptus from the embryological through the fetal stages will be examined as will the key physiological transitions necessary to sustain the newly introduced extrauterine life of the neonate.

Genetic screening; ultrasound evaluation; and fetal well-being studies will be examined as they relate to the role of the NNP. There are hundreds of HNS products widely available in various pharmacies, health food stores, grocery stores and the internet. This course will introduce students to HNS supported by the German Commission E. The German Commission E is a governmental regulatory agency established in 1978, composed of scientist, toxicologists, physicians and pharmacists who evaluate current clinical trails and herbs indigenous to cultural origins and native lands will also be discussed, as this field is continually evolving. Each lecture will discuss the scientific evidence, indications, dosage and safety considerations for each HNS presented.

Herbs, Nutraceuticals and Supplements for Advanced Practice Nursing III

This course incorporates both a weekly seminar and a one day/per week clinical observation with a practitioner who utilizes HNS in their practice (i.e. naturopath, herbalist, conventional practitioner). Seminars will be led by Dr. Anastasi. Western diagnoses such as cancer, arthritis, AIDS etc. will be presented in case study formats. Currently, many healthcare providers do not inquire whether their patients are using HNS products nor do they document the use in medical records. Therefore, documentation on the use of HNS products will be emphasized. During each seminar, students will be required to analyze and formulate appropriate therapeutic plans incorporating, when appropriate, HNS products. For clinical observations, students must be prepared to obtain and analyze appropriate historical data, as well as, to formulate and evaluate relevant therapeutic plans with their respective preceptors. During the clinical rotations, students are not expected to perform functions associated with their respective preceptor. That is, students will not administer herbs, acupuncture, osteopathic manipulations etc. because they are not trained or credentialed to perform such duties. However, students are expected to demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the specific regimen being prescribed and/or integrated into their clinical rotations. Cultural groups likely to use HNS will also be discussed.

Clinical relevance and the role of the NNP will be reviewed. This is a supervised clinical lab experience using simulations of a variety of clinical scenarios. Low-fidelity simulation will allow the student to practice specific NNP skills in isolation. The students will repeatedly practice starting different kinds of IV lines including umbilical lines, arterial blood gas acquisition, intubation, lumbar punctures, and practice with ventilator setting working with models. This will be progressed to medium-fidelity simulation using SIM baby who will be programmed for a variety of heart sounds, breath sounds, and vital signs to increase knowledge and skill acquisition. Finally, the students working in teams will use high fidelity stimulation in which case scenarios will be used to help assess the simulated neonatal case scenarios to plan, implement, and evaluate NNP action in a professional, respectful environment. Emphasis is placed on refinement and perfection of decision-making and technical skills in patient care management, including performance of selected invasive diagnostic/therapeutic procedures.

The DNP resident will demonstrate comprehensive assessment, advanced differential diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and evaluation of care and synthesis of evidence-based practice for patients with a variety of conditions. This doctoral level course is designed to provide the tools for the doctoral level advanced practice nurse to evaluate, translate and integrate published research results into clinical practice. During the course, students will learn how to conceptualize clinical practice problems, how to transform these problems into answerable clinical research questions, how to search for the best clinical evidence, how to assess clinical evidence using basic epidemiological, biostatistical and scientific principals and how to integrate the research results with patient's values and preferences across clinical sites. The course will culminate in a systematic review of a body of research relevant to advanced practice nursing.
