P&S Medical Review: Nov 1993, Vol.1, No.1
Letter From the Editor
The P&S Medical Review was conceived by a group of third year medical students in the spring of 1992. Recognizing the expanding role of medical literature, the P&S Medical Review seeks to address academic needs by providing opportunities for experience in the processes of scientific writing and analysis. P&S students have long participated informally by researching, reviewing, and presenting topics of clinical concern during major clerkships. In an environment increasingly dominated by current literature, reading, writing, and editing skills are invaluable. The P&S Medical Review is designed to serve as a forum for the publication of student-written review articles. In addition, it provides students the opportunity to become involved in editing a peer-reviewed journal with an editorial staff made up entirely of P&S students which will work closely with a board of faculty advisors.
Since its inception two years ago, the P&S Medical Review, has gained support throughout the Columbia-Presbyterian and affiliate communities. Its scope has likewise expanded and we have sought to establish regular features. While student review articles remain the priority, the first issue contains contributions from faculty as well. An original paper of historical significance by a P&S author is reprinted in conjunction with a commentary offered by a current member of the P&S faculty. With the inclusion of a clinicopathologic correlate, we seek to explore the vast and varied pathology seen at Presbyterian Hospital. Finally, we are fortunate to have world leaders in science and medicine at P&S. We are pleased to include in this issue an original article by Harold C. Neu, M.D.
The format of the P&S Medical Review is by no means final; growth and expansion are hallmarks of a young publication. Nevertheless, the commitment is to maintain a scholarly scientific journal which addresses controversial and novel topics in medicine. P&S has a pioneering tradition, and again takes the lead as one of the few schools to produce an independent student journal. We are, therefore, proud to present the first issue of the P&S Medical Review.
