R&D Committee Awards

The CPMC Office of Clinical Trials Research and Development Committee met in April to review and select award recipients for 1996-97. Out of 24 applications, 10 were selected for clinical research awards of $50,000 each. Dr. Lewis P. Rowland, chairman of the Research and Development Committee, said of the winners, "These young investigators bode well for the research future of CPMC."

The 10 winners:

Dr. Stephen J. Donovan, P&S assistant professor of clinical psychiatry; Dr. Randolph S. Marshall, P&S assistant professor of neurology; Dr. Robert Fine, P&S assistant professor of medicine; Dr. Paul E. Harris, P&S assistant professor of clinical pathology; Dr. Tuan H. Vu, P&S assistant professor of neurology; Dr. Michael Flamm, P&S assistant professor of clinical medicine; Dr. Angela M. Christiano, the J. Lowry Miller Assistant Professor of Molecular Dermatology; Dr. Leroy E. Rabbani, P&S assistant professor of medicine; Dr. Paula Annunziato, P&S assistant professor of pediatrics; and Dr. Mitchell F. Berman, P&S assistant clinical professor of anesthesiology.

Two alternates, chosen in case any of the 10 winners fails to receive IRB approval or receives other funding that requires him or her to forfeit the CPMC grant, are Dr. Jeanine D'Armiento, P&S postdoctoral research fellow in medicine, and Dr. Dorothy Adams, P&S assistant professor of radiology.

In addition, the Research & Development Committee voted to shorten the length of time between application deadline and award notice by extending the next application deadline from Oct. 15, 1996, to Jan. 15, 1997. Next year's award recipients will be announced at the end of March with funding beginning July 1.

Advisory Committee Awards

The CPMC Office of Clinical Trials Advisory Committee has approved funding for a second group of 1995-96 recipients, who were announced this spring. That funding is designed to support projects and programs within the medical center that improve the infrastructure supporting clinical research. The committee, chaired by Dr. David Bickers, P&S chairman of dermatology, selected the following to receive funding beginning in December.

Dr. Annetine C. Gelijns, assistant professor of public health, and Dr. Alan J. Moskowitz, P&S assistant professor of clinical medicine (with matching funds from the Department of Surgery); Dr. Henry Ginsberg, director of the Irving Center for Clinical Research and Irving Professor of Medicine; Dr. Richard K. Scher, P&S professor of clinical dermatology (with matching funds from the Department of Dermatology); and Dr. Robert L. DeLapaz, P&S professor of radiology.

The Columbia-Presbyterian Office of Clinical Trials and the Health Sciences Office of Columbia Innovation Enterprise will be moving into new quarters this summer. Clinical Trials and CIE will share a newly renovated wing on the 15th floor of the Presbyterian Hospital Building (PH 15 Center). Watch for further details.
