Kass to Direct St. Luke's-Roosevelt Planning

Dr. Frederic Kass, P&S senior associate dean for clinical affairs, will direct Columbia's participation in the planning for achieving a greater degree of clinical, academic, and programmatic integration among St. Luke's-Roosevelt, Presbyterian Hospit al, and Columbia.

In announcing the appointment, Dr. Herbert Pardes, vice president and dean, said the purpose is to consolidate the responsibility to oversee the wide variety of discussions that will occur at the departmental and programmatic level throughout the institu tions. "There are many threads, but we want to achieve a unified fabric," Dr. Pardes says. "To achieve that, we need someone with Fred's broad experience and perspective on clinical and academic matters. He will be able to see where the connections can mo st effectively be made and where we might achieve greater effectiveness through coordination of effort."

Dr. Pardes stresses that the operational-linkage discussions will be focused primarily at the departmental level, with Dr. Kass providing general oversight and assistance through the dean's office.

Dr. Kass says he is pleased to take on the role because the successful integration of St. Luke's-Roosevelt, Presbyterian, and Columbia programs is critical to the future well-being of the overall medical enterprise. "The historic affiliation between Colum bia and St. Luke's-Roosevelt can serve as a fulcrum for creating a tighter, more cost-efficient unified medical center, while maintaining academic quality and meeting our responsibilities toward the citizens of our communities."

The appointment is effective immediately.
