Special Collections Director

Richard Hollinger became head of archives and special collections for the Augustus C. Long Health Sciences Library in July. He worked for four years at New York Public Library, where he played a key role in the early stages of development of the institution's archives.

"My primary goal for special collections is to develop documentation for the history of CPMC," Mr. Hollinger said. "There are two aspects to the holdings now. One is the history of medicine in general. The other is the history of the health sciences campus. I won't be actively collecting material just because it documents the history of medicine, but because it supports the mission of the library and scholarly resources, which is to meet the information needs of CPMC."

At New York Public Library, Mr. Hollinger devoted much of his time to a project that focused on preserving and providing access to manuscript holdings in non-paper format.

"That background is going to be very helpful here, because I'm finding that medical records are very media-intensive," he said.

Mr. Hollinger graduated from California State University-San Bernardino in 1978 with a B.A. in history. He earned a master's degree in history from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1984 and a master's in public history/historic preservation from California State University-Dominguez Hills in 1993.
