New Chairman of Surgery
Dr. Eric A. Rose, professor of surgery, has been named the Valentine Mott, Johnson and Johnson Professor of Surgery and chairman of surgery. Dr. Herbert Pardes, vice president and dean, has described Dr. Rose as "a stellar example of Columbia-Presbyterian's clinical and research expertise."
"Dr. Rose is an internationally recognized authority on the surgical treatment of end-stage heart disease. As the director of the Columbia-Presbyterian Heart Transplant Service from 1982-93, he developed one of the most active programs in the United States," Dr. Pardes says. "He has been a pioneer in the successful use of heart transplantation in children."
His research focus includes the investigation of new approaches to immunosuppression, cross-species transplantation, and development of alternatives to heart transplants.
Dr. Rose, a native New Yorker and graduate of Columbia College, received his medical degree from P&S and did his internship and residency in surgery at Presbyterian Hospital. He joined the hospital staff and P&S faculty in 1982.
Dr. Rose received a John Jay Award from Columbia College in March 1994. The award, given annually to Columbia College alumni of distinction, is named for the first chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, a member of Columbia College's Class of 1764.
