First Community Health Outreach Workers Graduate

Hundreds of local children and families will be enrolled in Child Health Plus and Medicaid where they will receive government-subsidized health care, thanks to a group of 15 graduates of Northern Manhattan Community Voices Collaborative’s Community Health Outreach and Enrollment Program.

Many residents from Harlem and Washington Heights/Inwood are eligible for CHP and Medicaid yet remain uninsured. A complicated and time-consuming application process has been targeted as the main reason a large percentage of area children who are eligible for CHP have not enrolled for this vital assistance.

The recently graduated Community Health Outreach Workers will be stationed at various sites throughout the community to help enroll as many applicants as possible in CHP and Medicaid. Their work will include explaining program benefits, screening applicants, collecting required documents, helping applicants complete applications, and conducting follow-up work with both families and state agencies.

The graduates were honored during a ceremony at the opening of Alianza Dominicana’s Center for Health Promotion and Education.

The Northern Manhattan Community Voices Collaborative is the result of an effort by the School of Dental and Oral Surgery, Harlem Hospital, and Alianza Dominicana. |R
