Changing of the Guard in M.D./Ph.D. Program

Dr. Michael Shelanski, Delafield Professor and Chairman of Pathology, was named the new director of the M.D./Ph.D. program effective July 1. After close to 20 years as director, Dr. David Schachter, professor of physiology and cellular biophysics, has decided to step down and return to research.

This is a cooperative program sponsored by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and P&S. It allows students to work toward a Ph.D. degree in addition to earning an M.D. degree. Students enrolled in the M.D./Ph.D. program must complete the basic science requirements of the medical program, complete the Ph.D. at a participating department, then return to P&S to complete the balance of requirements for the M.D. degree.

Since 1980, Dr. Shachter has built a reputation for excellence in the program he directed. “Under David’s leadership the program has grown and strengthened in both the number and quality of graduates,” says Dr. Herbert Pardes, vice president and dean. “His talent and dedication set a very high standard. Fortunately, Dr. Shelanski’s abilities make him the perfect candidate to continue in this tradition. He is a superb scientist and educator, and I am sure that the program will continue to thrive under his direction.”

Dr. Shelanski’s other responsibilities at P&S and the hospital will continue. |R
