Dermatology Ranks 2nd in NIH Funding

The Department of Dermatology ranks second in funding from the National Institutes of Health for the fiscal year 1999. After ranking sixth in 1997 and 10th the year before, the department garnered more than $2.7 million, which improved its ranking to second in the nation and first of all dermatology departments in New York.

“Our goal is to be No. 1 in the year 2000,” says Dr. David Bickers, Carl Truman Nelson Professor and Chairman of Dermatology. “The most important aspect of this achievement is that dermatologic research at Columbia has moved to the front rank worldwide and has established a major presence here in investigative cutaneous biology.

“This could not have happened without the strong support of the University and New York Presbyterian Hospital that permitted the construction of state-of-the-art laboratories and the recruitment of outstanding research scientists.” |R
