New York Presbyterian Hospital was the only hospital in the tri-state area to be included in the U.S. News & World Report’s 1999 Best Hospitals Honor Roll. Out of 188 U.S. facilities, New York Presbyterian and only 12 others were selected for this list.

The magazine’s July 19 issue ranked all 6,299 U.S. hospitals and published a top-50 list for each of 16 specialties. The facilities that ranked above the mean in six or more specialties made the honor roll. Included in New York Presbyterian’s specialty scores were top five rankings in gynecology, psychiatry, and neurology and neurosurgery. It ranked in the top 10 in urology and pediatrics and in the top 15 in respiratory disorders and cardiology and heart surgery. The hospital was in the top 20 among digestive tract, hormonal disorders, orthopedics, rheumatology, and rehabilitation specialties.

Harlem Hospital

Of the New York City hospitals that are part of New York’s Health and Human Services Hospital Network, Harlem Hospital was the only facility to place in the U.S. News & World Report’s 1999 Best Hospitals rankings. It earned a top 50 placing for the specialty of geriatrics.

Geriatric care at Harlem Hospital was cited for its excellence in inpatient care and ensuring that proper care and follow up are given to patients released from the hospital. Harlem Hospital also received favorable rankings for technology and its ratio of registered nurses to beds. |R
