William H. Gates Sr.Thanks to William H. Gates Sr., the Joseph L. Mailman School of Public Health received grants from his foundation of the same name totaling $1.36 million for three international women’s health projects operated by the Center for Population and Family Health. The grants will be used to fund programs that prevent maternal mortality in Africa, bring effective health services to refugees, and integrate family planning with HIV prevention services to rural Ugandan women.

The school also received funding from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation. It has approved a three-year grant of nearly $1.5 million to the school, establishing a Macy Scholars program in July 1999 to provide medical students with a fifth year of training leading to a master of public health degree.
