Electrical Fire Shuts Down Black BuildingAn electrical feeder cable caught fire in the sub-basement of the Black Building, forcing the emergency evacuation of faculty and staff there and in connecting buildings sometime between 9 and 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23. Although the fire was quickly contained and extinguished, power outages in Black and other buildings ensued, displacing many employees for parts or all of that day. All persons located in Black were sent home and told to call before reporting in Wednesday. Fortunately, there was no disruption of patient services, nor to any animal facility operations, according to a joint statement released by the offices of Mort Grusky, deputy vice president for budget and finance, and Kathy Martin, senior vice president for hospital operations. Also believed to be safely secure were all research experiments. Power was restored and all buildings opened by the beginning of the next workday. The presence of repair work caused only minor inconveniences throughout that week, including the closing of a stretch of sidewalk outside Black on 168th Street for the remainder of that work week.
