New Dental Facility Opens at Morningside

The School of Dental and Oral Surgery recently celebrated the opening of the newly built Columbia University Morningside Dental Associates. Located at 1244 Amsterdam Ave. (at West 121st Street), the new faculty practice helps fulfill Columbia’s commitment to the community by focusing its attention on University employees and students as well as local residents.

Dr. Richard Low, a general dentist with 20 years of experience, will direct the facility. With its state-of-the-art technology and a service-oriented staff, the six-chair, 15-practitioner office offers a full range of general dentistry and specialty care in the areas of endodontics, periodontics, and oral and maxillofacial surgery.

The facility accepts Columbia’s Dental Plan and Dental Plan Plus. It is open weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are made by calling (212) 961-1266.

The Department of Medicine dedicated the John Edsall-John Wood Asthma Center at the P&S Faculty Club on March 10. Currently working from three locations, the facilities comprise the first and only comprehensive asthma center in the New York metropolitan area.

The center combines the efforts of several professionals from multiple disciplines to provide three major areas of service: basic and clinical research; state-of-the-art patient care and education; and professional training. A generous start-up grant by Robert H. Berkeley last year made the center’s establishment possible.

The center is named for Dr. John R. Edsall, co-director of the tuberculosis unit and attending physician in the Department of Medicine, and Dr. John A. Wood, who served as clinical professor of medicine and attending physician for Presbyterian Hospital until his retirement in 1994. Drs. Edsall and Wood were on hand for the event, as were Mrs. Louise DeSalvo, a patient of Dr. Edsall’s; Drs. Kenneth Prager and Byron Thomashow, center staff members (Dr. Thomashow has pledged funding for the center); and Dr. Paul Rothman, who directs the center.

The following are the three current locations of the center:

  • Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center
    630 W. 168th St.

  • Columbia Eastside
    16 E. 60th St.

  • Century Building (Riverdale)
    2600 Netherlands Ave.
