Columbia Team Forming to Join Fight Against Cancer

How would you like to take a walk or run with television news personalities Katie Couric and Matt Lauer, or models Cindy Crawford, Salma Hayek, and Emme? You may have the chance on Saturday, May 1, when you’re invited to join them in the fight against cancer by participating with the Columbia University Health Sciences team in the second annual Revlon Run/Walk for Women.

The Revlon Run/Walk for Women raises vital funds for research into the causes and cures of breast and ovarian cancers and provides support to women surviving those diseases. The Run/Walk raised more than $10 million in its first year. In New York City, the funds raised go to 14 health organizations, including AMDeC Foundation (an important supporter of research at Columbia), Columbia University Breast Cancer Screening Partnership, and the Harlem Hospital Cancer Control Center/Patient Navigator Program.

Event organizers expect 30,000 participants in this year’s 5K fund-raiser, which is open to men and women. Faculty and staff of Columbia University can invite friends and family to participate. The event starts at Times Square and ends near the east meadow of Central Park where post-event festivities will take place. Participants are encouraged to get sponsors to raise further funds for the cause. Prizes will be awarded to those who raise $175 and more.

To participate, contact Sally McLain in the Office of External Relations, 305-3900 (ext. 6-3900). Or stop by PH 1-132 and pick up an application.
