Columbia Grad Joins Office of External Relations

Columbia graduate William Allstetter has joined the External Relations staff as director of science communications. Mr. Allstetter has had a previous working relationship with William AllstetterExternal Relations as a temporary science writer. In this full-time position, he will produce Biomedical Frontiers, write news releases and articles for various External Relations publications, and contribute to other media relations efforts for Health Sciences.

Mr. Allstetter attended Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism where he earned a master’s degree with a concentration in science writing. He has worked in the field of journalism as a free-lance writer, photographer, reporter, and editor.

Dr. Darrick E. Antell, assistant clinical professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery, was recently included in Town and Country magazine's “T&C's Directory of Top Cosmetic Surgeons in the U.S.” The publication compiled the list by surveying thousands of surgeons nationwide. The directory was published in Town and Country's March 1999 edition.

Dr. Candido Cabo, associate research scientist, Department of Pharmacology, was awarded a grant from the Whitaker Foundation for his research titled “A Computer Model of the Infarcted Heart: The Role of the Different Ionic Currents in the Dynamics of Ventricular Tachycardia.” The foundation has awarded more than $3 million to 17 universities for biomedical engineering research to improve hip replacements, develop medical instruments, refine diagnostic techniques, and solve research and clinical problems.

Dr. Steven J. Scrivani has been appointed the Edward V. Zegarelli Assistant Professor in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the School of Dental and Oral Surgery, as well as the associate director of the new Center for Oral, Facial and Head Pain. Dr. Scrivani completed a four-year fellowship training in pain medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. His clinical and research interests are trigeminal neuralgia, neurogenic facial pain, headache, nerve injuries, and functional brain imaging of pain.

Dr. Joan M. LeimanDr. Joan M. Leiman, executive deputy vice president for Health Sciences, was honored with a 1999 Athena Award by the Partnership for Women's Health at Columbia during a Feb. 10 ceremony at the Cosmopolitan Club in New York City. Dr. Leiman was one of four to receive the award, which honors leaders in women's health and gender-specific medicine.
