In Memory of Steven Z. Miller

From: Dr. Gerald Fischbach

Friday, October 21, 2004

Steven Z. Miller, one of the most loved and most talented members of the P&S faculty, was killed in a plane crash Tuesday night. President Bollinger and I extend our deepest sympathies to all students, faculty and staff who had the great privilege to know him.

Steve was a Columbia College and P&S graduate who joined the P&S faculty in 1993. He was the Arnold P. Gold Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at New
York-Presbyterian Hospital, and a much beloved teacher to many P&S students over the past decade. Steve’s great passion was medical education from scientific and humanistic perspectives.

At the time of his death, he was traveling on behalf of the Gold Foundation to instruct students in the Midwest about humanism and professionalism in medicine.

Steve’s wife, Dodi Meyer, M.D., also a member of the Department of Pediatrics, shared Steve’s ideals in her work on cultural diversity within the community.

Steve won numerous awards for his teaching, including the prestigious Columbia University Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching. Medical students voted him Teacher of the Year on multiple occasions.

We have lost an extraordinary human being, an outstanding scholar, and a great physician. We will honor Dr. Miller's contributions and legacy in a formal way in the coming weeks.
