Association of Professors of Medicine Recognizes
Drs. Lee Goldman and Joe Garcia

NEW YORK (Feb. 25, 2009) – The Association of Professors of Medicine (APM) has awarded Lee Goldman, M.D., and Joe G. N. Garcia, M.D., the 2009 APM Robert H. Williams, M.D., Distinguished Chair of Medicine Award, and 2009 APM Diversity Award, respectively.

Dr. Goldman, who is currently the executive vice president for health and biomedical sciences and dean of the faculties of health sciences and medicine at Columbia University, is being presented the award at the APM’s Winter Meeting, February 25 – 28, 2009, in San Francisco.

APM recognizes outstanding contributions from its members through two awards, the Robert H. Williams, M.D., Distinguished Chair of Medicine Award, and the APM Diversity Award.

Annually, APM presents the Williams Award, honoring the association’s first president, to recognize outstanding service during a recipient’s tenure as chair of a department of internal medicine.

Goldman previously served as chair of the department of medicine at University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine.

Dr. Garcia, who is receiving the Diversity Award, is the Lowell T. Coggeshall Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine at University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. APM created the Diversity Award to recognize individuals who have effectively improved diversity within medical schools or who have worked to ensure patients of all ethnicities receive the highest quality of care.

“I am honored to be part of a long and esteemed tradition, and to be recognized along with Dr. Garcia for our contributions to the academic and clinical fields within medicine,” Dr. Goldman said of receiving the award.
